    Job Summary:

    The Family Counselor works to counsel and aid individuals in the program and support family members in dealing with substance and alcohol abuse and recovery.


    Reports To:  Chief Clinical Officer/Clinical Director


    Job Duties:

    • Great families of new admissions as requested, explain the family packet and provide families with a copy.
    • Obtain a release of information (HIPPA) or confirm a ROI is obtained.
    • Contact the families of all new admissions during the initial call to ensure families are notified of Family Educational Series, visitation day and received a family packet. Mail family packet as needed.
    • Obtain a history of patient’s substance abuse and/or mental health issues.
    • Review the family assessment questionnaire and communicate to the team the level of support from patient’s family.
    • Provide family tours for potential patients on an as needed basis.           
    • Conduct family conferences on an as needed basis.
    • Participate in one-day family day which includes providing family with education lectures, provide family building groups and obtain visiting forms from patients.
    • Conduct return phone calls to ROI approved family members and communication pertinent information to the clinical team.
    • Provide requested statistic to Family Program Director on a monthly basis.
    • Manage a caseload of patients and their families up to 25-35 patients.
    • Assist with caseload in the absences of colleges.
    • Present family educational lectures to the residential patients as needed.
    • Communicate all patient related information to the treatment team and work closely with the primary counselor.
    • Prepare and maintain documentation for all patient related communication such as family contacts, family conferences, summary of family assessments, group lectures, individual sessions with patients, and development of family treatment problems with primary counselors.  This is not limited to, but includes, phone calls, in person meetings, emails, and so on.
    • Conduct the Family Educational Series which includes educational lectures, family building groups, participation in One-Day family program, family conferences and individual family sessions with patients.
    • Participate in daily treatment planning as part of the treatment team and provide up to date information.
    • Participate in weekly supervision with Family Program Coordinator.
    • Attend all required in-services trainings and clinical department meetings.
    • Complete all required trainings through Health Stream Series.
    • Maintain compliance with all Sunrise House/AAC policy and procedures.
    • Maintain compliance with all Division of Mental Health and Addiction services (DMHAS) regulations and Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) standards.


    Job Requirements:

    • Minimum High school diploma or equivalent– Bachelor’s preferred.
    • Drug & Alcohol counseling certification from an accredited institution.
    • 2 years experience working in a substance abuse environment.
    • Ability to work effectively with people and aid them in adjusting to their specific problems.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, family members, and other members of staff.
    • Knowledge and experiences in running groups, meetings and/or activities.
    • Ability to read and interpret written information; write clearly and informatively; edits work for spelling and grammar. Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; listens and gets clarification; responds well to questions; demonstrates group presentation skills; and participates in meetings.
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
    • If in personal recovery, a minimum of 2 years clean and sober.
