    The Lead Medical Records Coder is responsible for diagnostic coding on all inpatient records using the ICD-10-CM coding system, and entering that information into the CPSI Electronic Medical Records.  A portion of the time will be allocated to the other HIM functions for which orientation /training will be provided.


    Reports To:  Director of Medical Records


    Job Duties:

    • Assigns ICD-10-CM codes to medical records, according to the coding guidelines established by CMS.
    • Maintains a working knowledge of ICD-10 coding principles, governmental regulations and requirements pertaining to billing and documentation.
    • Meets established standards on records coded per day and error rates.
    • Identifies, investigates and resolves issues related to completeness and errors in medical records.
    • Screens chart locations to verify that relocating rules are followed.
    • Releases patient-related data with proper written consent.
    • Follows all requirements of HIPAA and state laws regarding protected health information.
    • Performs general office functions and other duties as assigned.
    • Consistently arrive for work on time and adhere to attendance policies.

    Job Requirements:

    • Certified Professional Coder (CPC).
    • Minimum High School Diploma required.  Associate’s degree preferred
    • Ability to prioritize and organize. Must be skilled ICD-10-CM coding, in Microsoft Office and keyboarding. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. Must be able to read, write and understand English. Must possess excellent telephone etiquette and customer service skills. Exceptional attention to detail.
    • Minimum three to five years direct medical coding experience, preferably inpatient.  Experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR). Experience working in a medical office or medical records department.
    • Works under immediate supervision. Assignments are performed according to specific detailed instructions for easily learned non-specialized or repetitive duties. Little position flexibility.
    • Frequently makes decisions, which are restricted only by organization-wide policies and with little direct guidance from the supervisor.         
    • Must pass CORI check / OIG / GSA and pre-employment drug screen.
    • If in personal recovery, a minimum of two years continuous abstinence required.
