    Job Summary:

    The primary role of the Mental Health Technician (MHT) is to provide direct and support services to drug and alcohol abusers. Specifically, the two main functions of the MHT are 1) supervision of the clients and 2) ensuring their participation in treatment related services and facilitating psycho-educational and recreational activities.   Work is performed in accordance with established regulations, policies and procedures, but employees are expected to exercise significant initiative and independent judgment in discharging duties. Work is reviewed by the Director of Nursing through an evaluation of the timely and accurate completion of assignments.


    Reports To: Director of Nursing


    Job Duties:

    • Assists in supervision of client activities and be aware of client whereabouts at all times, including breaks and internal activities.
    • Attend all mandatory trainings and in-house conferences/seminars as directed by Supervisor.
    • Engages clients in therapeutic activities as appropriate.
    • Provides a brief overview of the housing program in regard to program rules, procedures, and services; with each new client.
    • Maintains order and ensures compliance with rules and regulations; ensures that clients conduct themselves in an orderly manner when on agency property or in agency vehicles.
    • Monitors clients for signs of medical distress and/or behavioral concerns on an ongoing basis and through routine bed checks, and addresses and documents where necessary.
    • Provides appropriate support and structure for clients in dealing with their recovery; interacts continually with clients.
    • Obtain vital signs upon admission and at designated times as well as physical symptoms of clients.
    • Supervise clients use of personal hygiene products that are not to be stores in client bedrooms.
    • Search possessions, clothing and other client items, label accordingly and store appropriately.
    • Ensures client wake-up and bedtime, escorts residents on shopping trips, recreation, medical appointments etc.
    • Escorts clients within building or to hospital or other services when necessary.
    • May be required to escort clients on store runs, when necessary, for the purchase of personal items.
    • Enforces program rules at all times.
    • Gets daily mail, observes confidentiality standards and distributes to clients.
    • Completes Q’s every 15 minutes to ensure supervision and safety of all clients.
    • Records accurate and up-to-date reports on every client for the three shift reports.
    • Continually updates Bed List ensuring that all admissions and discharges are recorded in a timely fashion.
    • Randomly inspects all rooms, common areas, hallways and bathrooms every thirty minutes and performs a thorough search for contraband not less than weekly.
    • Responds appropriately to all medical and other emergencies.
    • Performs other duties, tasks and services as assigned by the Program Director or supervisor on duty.
    • Reports to the supervisor any discrepancies in client's whereabouts.
    • Confiscates and secures any contraband found, and notifies the appropriate supervisor on duty.
    • Conducts comprehensive and random room and unit searches with program management staff, when assigned.
    • Conducts search of all client bags when being admitted to the facility.  Confiscates and secures any contraband found, and notifies the appropriate Program Director or supervisor on duty in their absence.
    • Escort patients to smoke breaks and meals as a group.
    • Other duties as assigned.


    Job Requirements:

      • High School Diploma or equivalent required.   
      • Certified as a Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the State of Mississippi within 6 months of hire 
      • Two years’ experience in dealing with substance abuse clients preferred 
      • Ability to read and interpret written information; write clearly and informatively; edits work for spelling and grammar. Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; listens and gets clarification; responds well to questions; demonstrates group presentation skills; and participates in meetings.  
      • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. 
      • Must be able to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and flexible hours. 
      • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training within 60 days of hire 
      • American Heart Association Basic Life Support within 60 days of hire    
      • Valid driver license and insurable driving record (refer to Guidelines for Driving Company Vehicles)   
      • If in personal recovery, a minimum of 2 years sustained recovery
