Job Summary

The CNA functions as an integral member of the patient care team; will provide basic nursing care to patients under the direction of the licensed nurse to meet the personal needs, comfort and safety of patients.  Qualified candidate will exhibit patience and compassion when interacting with all patients, visitors and staff.


Duties and Responsibilities: to include but not limited to the following

  • Screen baggage at admission. Accurately records all patient belongings and valuables in CPSI on the Clothing Inventory E-form. Secures patient valuables such as cash, cell phones in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Orients patient to the unit and to the hospital (when possible); provides ongoing patient education as directed by licensed personnel.
  • Performs waive testing (Dip, Occult, Pregnancy), Finger Stick/Blood Sugar and EKG’s and appropriately documents in the EMR.
  • Performs a full range of patient safety duties including: assisting licensed staff with full body evaluation, clothing and room searches, conducting face checks (hourly on detox, q2 on rehab), dispensing/collecting razors, checking call light attachments and timely response, minimizing patient room clutter; patient monitoring i.e. meals/groups, during physician rounds and smoking         
  • Provide/assist patient with all areas of ADL’s such as: bathing, ambulation, tray set-up, feeding and toileting. Passes/fills water pitchers throughout the day. Encourages/motivates patient participation in groups and unit activities.
  • Assist licensed personnel by taking/recording vital signs and patient 1:1 monitoring as directed.
  • Reports observations from direct patient care to licensed nurse to assure continued safety of all patients and the unit. Ensures patient compliance with fall risk objectives.
  • Schedules and documents psychiatric/psychology inpatient consults, post discharge doctor appointments, collection of urine toxicology and diet change needs. Obtains patient consents as requested, prepares Day One Cards and maintains unit census book.
  • Follows Infection Control P&P including handwashing technique, use of PPE, cleaning of patient Nebulizers including appropriate storage.
  • Communicates and assists licensed or clinical staff in AMA prevention.
  • Assists patients with room and floor transfers and discharges; orients patient to new unit upon arrival including introduction to on duty staff.
  • At end of shift communicates to incoming CNA pertinent data regarding patient activity or needs.
  • Consistently arrives for work on time and adheres to attendance policies.
  • Maintain unit stock levels of supplies.
  • Provides professional and responsive service to customers/patients and visitors.
  • Consistently arrive for work on time and adhere to attendance policies.

  • High School graduate or equivalent (G.E.D.).
  • Minimum six months experience as a CNA/PCA
  • Substance abuse treatment/psych experience desirable
  • Must pass CORI check / OIG / GSA and pre-employment drug screen

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Certified Nursing Assistant License
  • CPR certified

Knowledge, Skills, and Other Abilities:

  • Ability to read, write, communicate and understand directions in English.
  • Demonstrates accuracy in taking manual vital signs
  • Strong interpersonal skills are required to gather information from individuals, build relationships, intervene in difficult situations and provide excellent customer service
  • Computer literate - minimum of data entry skills
